About & Ownership
The World Sentinel is an independent global news masthead devoted to international humanitarian coverage — the crises, the displaced, the aid system, and the laws of war. Its purpose is stated plainly: to report international news, not relating to any one country's promotion, in the hope of effecting global humanitarian change.
A sentinel's job is not to look where everyone is already looking. It is to keep watch where the world looks away — and to say, in public and on the record, what it sees.
Ownership
The World Sentinel is an independent global masthead, owned and published by Kaya J. Kelly.
Publishing operations are based in New York, United States.
No state, government, political party, or interest group holds any stake in this masthead — financial, editorial, or otherwise. Its independence is the whole point of it.
Standards
- We never invent news. Nothing on this masthead is fabricated, dramatized, or imagined. During launch, placeholder entries are clearly labeled as launch placeholders and describe a desk's mandate — they are never presented as reporting.
- Verified sources only. Reporting rests on official releases, primary documents, and verifiable public records. If it cannot be sourced, it does not run.
- Desk bylines. Work is published under desk bylines — the Crisis Desk, the Law Desk, the Aid Desk — one institutional voice, accountable as a whole. We do not publish under invented personal names, ever.
- Corrections honoured. When we get something wrong, we say so in the same place, at the same prominence, without delay. Write to the newsroom to request a correction.
- No hidden hands. No state or party holds any interest in this publication, and none directs a word of it.
Editorial lanes
The Sentinel publishes in three clearly separated lanes:
- Public-domain and official material, in full. United Nations and agency releases, official reports, judgments, and other public-domain records may be republished complete, always identified as such.
- Original analysis. The Sentinel's own commentary and legal analysis — international law, humanitarian law, and the financial machinery that enables conflict — written at the desks and published under desk bylines.
- Third-party reporting: headline, excerpt, and link. When another newsroom's reporting matters, we run its headline and a brief excerpt with clear attribution and a link to the original. We do not republish other journalists' work as our own.
The desks
- The Crisis Desk — Crisis Watch, The Displaced, and Voices: emergencies, forced displacement, and testimony from the record.
- The Law Desk — The Laws of War: international humanitarian law, the courts and tribunals, statelessness and nationality law.
- The Aid Desk — Aid & Accountability: humanitarian funding, delivery, and oversight of the aid system itself.
